Special Tests and Procedures in Surgical Pathology

Certain procedures require special tests and need to be closely coordinated with the Surgical Pathology Laboratory.  These procedures include: open lung biopsies, needle biopsies, kidney biopsies, and any tissue requiring electron microscopy studies, enzyme histochemistry, touch imprints, or frozen sections and specimens that need to be expedited. The techniques for handling these specimens vary depending on the type of information desired by the attending physician. The Surgical Pathology Laboratory should be notified prior to these procedures so that the tissue is processed properly.  Call (802)847-9445 to alert personnel to special procedures.  During regular working hours deliver the saline-soaked, gauze-wrapped specimen to Laboratory Specimen Receiving.  After 5 pm or on weekends or holidays, page the pathology resident on-call at 121-9585 or call Provider Access Service, (802)847-2700.

If a malignancy is identified in the sample(s) received, our laboratories may conduct additional standard of care analyses/testing as outlined by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Cancer protocols, the American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC) staging guidelines and/or the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) principles for pathologic review/biomarker testing guidelines for the specific tumor type.
