Specimen Information
Orthopedic, Cardiovascular and Other Appliances or Hardware:
At the discretion of the surgeon, and according to UVM Medical Center policy, for specimens exempt from laboratory examination (Policy LAB200.030), certain appliances need not be sent to the Pathology Laboratory. If they are sent, they will be described for legal documentation and retained for one month before being returned to the proper department or discarded, as appropriate. If an item is to be returned to the patient, note this on the surgical pathology requisition.
