S. haemotobium adults are found in the portal vein of the urinary bladder in the infected human. Laboratory recovery depends upon repeated daily examinations of fresh urine specimens collected around noon.

Repeat daily examination is optimal for recovery of parasites. Deliver specimen to laboratory as soon as possible. If sample cannot be delivered to the lab within 2 hours of sample collection, sample should be preserved with Total Fix. Use equal volume of Total Fix and urine collected.
